To view an interactive solution to a problem that is simitar to this one, select Interactive Solution 7.24. A 0.0150-kg bullet is fired straight up at a falling wooden block that has a mass of 4.52 kg. The bullet has a speed of 668 m/s when it strikes the block. The block originally was dropped from rest from the top of a building and had been falling for a time t when the collision with the bullet occurs. As a result of the collision, the block (with the bullet in it) reverses direction, rises, and comes to a momentary hailt at the top of the building. Find the time t.

Q1 A small object with a momentum of magnitude 2.71 kg m/s approaches head-on a large object at rest. The small object bounces straight back with a momentum of magnitude 6.19 kg m/s. What is the magnitude of the small object's momentum change in kg m/s? Q2 A force acts on a 4.708 kg mass as follows: the force starts at zero and rises to 60.334 N linearly in 2.24 seconds, it remains at 60.334 N for another 5.756 seconds,...

Example 4.3 A Bull's-Eye Every Time In a popular lecture demonstration, a projectile is fired at a target in such a way that the projectile leaves the gun at the same time the target is dropped from rest. Show that if the gun is initially aimed at the stationary target, the projectile hits the falling target as shown in figure (a). The velocity of the projectile (red arrows) changes in direction and magnitude, but its acceleration (purple arrows) remains constant....
