read thinking critically about ethical issues, case 1 p.173 / what are the moral issues? what would be the policy resolution? using ethics including utility, duty and virtue.

“Virtual child pornography” is the term given to video depictions of child–child or child–adult sexual activity in which the “participants” are not actual children but realistic computer-generated images of chil- dren. The Federal Child Pornography Prevention Act banned this kind of pornography, but in April 2002 the U.S. Supreme Court declared the ban unconstitutional. (The Court upheld the section of the law that bans por- nographic depictions of actual children, however.) Evaluate virtual child pornography from an ethical standpoint.

Answer #1

In my opinion, virtual child pornography should be banned because most of the video games are played by the children thus, they would be exposed to the sexual acts. Children do not have the capability to think on their own because of their lack of decision-making ability. Although they are virtual children, real children would be influenced by the acts of whoever is presented in the video games and not the person. So, justifying this as virtual act doesn’t make sense.

Utilitarian ethics suggests that an act would be considered ethical if it maximizes benefit to maximum number of people and reduce any harm. This would mean the virtual pornography using virtual children is wrong because it would cause more harm on real children and there is no use with them. Deontological or duty ethics suggests that an act would be considered ethical if the act fulfills one’s duty without worrying about the consequences. The judges and the government as the guardians of people and law should prevent this video game pornography involving virtual children in order to prevent any harm. Finally, virtue ethics suggests that people who are good would produce ethical acts, thus, insisting on the character of the person doing that acts. Thus, the acts of the video game producers who use virtual children as their subject are not good people. So, they need to be prevented from developing such video games.
