1.) Explain what Rose gardener’s disease, white/black piedra is and its life cycle
2.) Mycosis vs. intoxication
ROSE GARDENER'S DISEASE: It is known as SPOROTRICHOSIS,it is an infection caused by fungus called sporothrix.
This fungus lives in soil and plants like sphagnum moss and hay. There are three types of infection:
1.CUTANEOUS INFECTION: Under this infection, symptoms include small bumps which are red, pink, purple in color, after some time the bumps change into ulcers and open sores.
2.DISSEMINATED INFECTION:Under this infection spreads to various other body parts like joints, cranial nervous system, etc.Due to which symptoms like rheumatoid arthritis, headache, seizures, etc. occur.
PULMONARY INFECTION:Under this,cough,chest pain and dyspnea,fever occur.
INVESTIGATION:Small tissue biopsy occurs.
Blood tests and culture
TREATMENT: 1.Itraconazole orally for 3-6 months
2.Supersaturated potassium iodide
3.Amphotericin B
PIEDRA is a type of superficial mycoses causing surface infection.Piedra mostly infect hair.
There are two types of PIEDRA:Black and White.
Black piedra fungus is Piedraia hortae and White piedra is Trichosporon beigelii.
MYCOSIS is a fungal infection, which is caused by the inhalation of spores or localization of the spores.
INTOXICATION is the state in which thereis a overdose of a particular toxin or substance leading to certain signs and symptoms seen in body. The most common intoxication is alcohol or drug intoxication.
