R: Examine the following argument. Is this an example of a “red herring”? Why or why not? “Jody Wilson-Raybould did not resign from cabinet because she disagreed on government policy regarding deferred prosecution for SNC-Lavalin. She resigned from cabinet because she was offered a portfolio that she did not want.”

(Answer) A “red herring” logical fallacy is when the person who is making the argument might present points that are nowhere along the lines of the actual issue. This means that the person who is making the argument is causing a distraction and eventually leading to a false conclusion by not sticking to the issue at hand.

In the above instance, Jody Raybould is supposed to be taking a stance against the government for its decision regarding the SNC-Lavalin issue. This means that he must direct her actions, words or work in a way that reflects that she is against this particular decision of the government. Instead, Jody directs her actions towards the resentment of a portfolio that she claimed to not want. Her resignation was pertaining to the wrong issue and hence her actions had little or no value in the SNC-Lavalin issue.
