A sample of n = 9 college students is obtained and each student is given a normal dose of the medicine for a period of four weeks. Following this, each student’s level of depression is measured using a standardized instrument used to screen for major depressive disorder. The scores on this instrument for the nine students are as follows: 5, 7, 9, 5, 6, 12, 4, 4, 2.      

a.) Assuming that scores for students with depression in the regular population average μ = 10, are the data sufficient to conclude that the medication has a significant effect on depressive symptoms?

Test at α = .05, two-tailed.

b.) Then, Compute r2, the percentage of variance explained by the treatment effect.

c.) Write a sentence demonstrating how the outcome of the hypothesis test and the measure of effect size would be presented in a research report.
