1.Gulf of Tonkin Resolution:

  • The Tonkin Gulf Resolution was a joint American decision. On 7 August 1964, Congress responded directly to a minor naval engagement called the Tonkin Gulf Incident. It is significant because it gave the US historical significance. President Lyndon B. Johnson's approval to use military force in Southeast Asia without formal declaration of war by Congress.
  • President Lyndon Johnson was ordered to "take all appropriate action to prevent any armed attack on the US forces and further aggressions" by the communist regime of North Vietnam, by the resolution of the Gulf of Tonkin.
  • The resolution of the war forces came as a direct reaction to the resolution of the Gulf of Tonkin, as Congress was trying to avoid a new military conflict with little input. At that moment, President Nixon felt that the resolution of the War Powers was illegal and it was "unconstitutional and harmful."

2.Watergate:

  • The 1972 presidential election saw the Watergate scandals in the lead up for election to the Democratic George McGovern, which was scandalous to US President and Republican Richard Nixon.
    A break-in took place within the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate building in Washington under the control of White House staff.
  • President Nixon was forced in 1975 to renounce his impeachment by admitting that the White House was involved in the breaking-in and subsequent disguise.
