Why can’t the chain of causes “go back to infinity,” according to Aquinas?

Aquinas in his Cosmological argument presents God as the external and prime mover setting the universe in a motion or change, though, God remains unmoved or unchanged. According to Aquinas there needs to be a prime mover that sets things in movement and if the chain of movements go backs to infinity there won't be a prime mover. Hence, to set things in movement the prime prime mover must be unmoved or unchanged and external to give that push to cause movement and set chain of causes that cannot go back to infinity.
