Which of the following statement(s) is/are TRUE regarding the hydrophobic effect?

A.

When lipids are introduced to a solution of water, the entropy of the system will increase.

B.

Nonpolar portions of the lipid molecule aggregate so that only the hydrophobic groups are exposed.

C.

When complete aggregation into micelle formation, the ordered solvent shell will be minimized and the entropy is increased.

D.

All of the statements are true.

Answer #1

Solution:

Option 1 and 3 are correct.

During cage like structure of lipid and water molecules, the overall entropy of the system increases.

After complete agregation in micelles formation, the order of the solvent shell will be minimized and hence entropy increaees.

Option 2 is incorrect because lipid exposed their nonpolar heads and bury their hydrobhobic tails inside.

Protein folding and lipid-bilayer formation result in decreased entropy for a protein molecule and bilayer components. The decrease entropy of the surrounding entropy is balanced by a large increase in the OTemperature Salt solutions Pressure Water molecules Water's ability to dissolve a wide variety of molecules is important, but more important is the hydrophobic effect, which drives the aggregation of nonpolar molecules and plays a role in the folding of proteins and formation of lipid bilayers.
