Researchers enrolled 2,100 women in a study and followed them every year for four years to determine the incidence rate of heart disease. After the first year, none had a new diagnosis of heart disease, but 150 were lost to follow-up. After year two, three had a new diagnosis of heart disease, and another 122 had been lost to follow-up. After year three, another eighteen had new diagnoses of heart disease, and 602 had been lost to follow-up. After four years, an additional 15 had new diagnoses with heart disease, and 258 more had been lost to follow-up. Calculate the incidence rate of heart disease among this cohort. Assume that persons with new diagnoses of heart disease and those lost to follow-up were disease-free for half the year, and thus contribute ½ year to the denominator. Answer #1
Year Under risk new diagnosis lost numerator denominator Incidence rate
1 2100 0 150 0 2100-150 +150/2=2025 0
2 2100-150 =1950 3 122 3 1950-122+122/2 +3/2=1890.5 0.0016
3 1950-122-3=1825 18 602 18 1825-602+602/2 +18/2= 1533 0.0117
4 1825-602-18= 1205 15 258 15 1205-258+258/2+15/2 = 1083.5 0.0138

Note : In year 1 , no new diagnosis , thus numerator =0

For denominator , we subtract num of lost cases from population under study and then add half of the lost cases =2100-150+150/2 = 2025

In year 2 , three new diagnosis , thus numerator =3

For denominator , we subtract num of lost cases from remaining population under study and then add half of the lost cases and half of the cases with new diagnosis =1950-122+122/2 +3/2=1890.5

6,750 people who were free of disease X were enrolled in a cohort study in 1985 and followed with annual exams and interviews through 1995. Exposure to factor A was determined at study enrollment and the participants were followed until 1995 to observe new cases of disease X. Data from the study at the end of follow-up are shown in the following table. What is the incidence rate of disease X among persons exposed to factor A? Exposure to Factor...

The Family Planning Association in Oxford, England studied 17,000 women who had been enrolled in a cohort study between 1968 and 1974 to look at the association between oral contraceptive (OC) use and venous thromboembolism (Vessey et al., 1989). For current users of OCs, person-time was counted from the time a woman began using OCs. For never or past users, it was counted from the time a woman enrolled in the study. Woman-years were counted until venous thromboembolism occurred, the...

We conducted a 2-year retrospective cohort study among all elderly members of a staff-model managed care organization who had a baseline diagnosis of chronic lung disease. The study outcomes were assessed over 2 years, from November 15, 1993, through November 14, 1995, and included hospitalizations for pneumonia and influenza. Of 1898 subjects, 1280 (67%) had received pneumococcal vaccination. This included 843 (44%) who were vaccinated prior to November 15, 1993 and an additional 437 (23%) vaccinated after that date. The Family Planning Association in Oxford, England have followed 17,000 women who enrolled in a cohort study between 1988 and 1994. A recent publication compared women currently using oral contraceptives (OCP) with women who were never used or were past users of OCP and reported venous thromboembolism (DVT). For current users of the OCP, person-years of observation were counted from the time a woman began using the OCP. For never or past users, person-years of observation were counted from the...

Another 25 men were lost to follow-up after being followed up for 2 years each and we do not have information about their prostate cancer status. The remaining men who never developed the disease were followed up for 15 years. Calculate the incidence density of prostate cancer in this sample. A....
