Business Dilemma

Components of a solid enterprise architecture include everything from documentation to business concepts to software and hardware. Deciding which components to implement and how to implement them can be a challenge. New IT components are released daily, and business needs continually change. An enterprise architecture that meets the cafe’s needs today may not meet those needs tomorrow. Building an enterprise architecture that is scalable, flexible, available, accessible, and reliable is key to the cafe’s success.

The cafe has a limited budget for computer equipment. One of your most valued employees, Nick Zele, is highly technical and always insisting that the cafe is outdated and needs to upgrade its equipment. Nick’s latest push is for dishwasher safe keyboards and mice for the cafe’s kiosks. The spill proof equipment would last longer and could be washed daily to remove germs and bacteria. The cost of the new hardware is around $1,000 for a keyboard and a mouse.

PROJECT FOCUS:

You understand the need to bring the cafe into the 21st century, however you have many equipment requirements and a limited budget.

If you could determine the return on investment (ROI) of the new computer equipment it would be easy to make a decision, unfortunately, this is a difficult task. For example, what is the ROI of a fire extinguisher? If you never use the fire extinguisher your return on the investment is low. If the first extinguisher puts out a fire that could destroy the entire building then its ROI is very high.

  • Why is it so difficult to determine the ROI of the components in your enterprise architecture?
  • What can you do to determine the cost/benefit or ROI of the proposed dishwasher safe keyboard and mice?

Answer #1

ROI (Return on the investment )

In this case, we are discussing how ROI is calculated in your enterprise architecture.

When you are in business you need to bring changes and adapt according to the latest trend and technologies which is required by a business.

FOLLOWING ARE THE POINTS TO DISCUSS WHEN THINKING OF ROI IN ENTERPRISE ARCHITECTURE

the business involved is cafe business. and a valued employee is insisting on an advanced up-gradation.

1) when in your food business your first accomplishment is hygiene. you need to look after the health and hygiene of the staff the consumers.

2)they are various things that have to be upgraded in business and return of investment can be monetary and non-monetary. if you see on a monetary basis once u take a chance of investing $1000 you always see at the positive side .first of all the keyboard your using is a ground for breeding germs when it is not cleaned. there is a chance of infections and here when your employee heath is at stake how will you bear the loss of absenteeism of employee.

3) the other most important thing knowing your ROI in terms of non-monetary benefits indirectly gives you monetary benefits. if an advance keyboard and mice are installed baring high expense. firstly it can be kept in hygienic conditions secondly every business though it is small or big need to invest in the latest technologies so that you improve the look and sophistication.

4) there are lot of competition in the market . you have met the challenges if you still follow the same old technique they will minimal loss but it will be incurring all the time. for example, if it's a normal keyboard your working any liquid spills on it you incur a loss instead of profit. now you have to bear a loss of repair it can be repaired or not it has no guarantee likewise nothing has a guarantee for a longer period we need to keep changing as demand rises of a particular thing for facing the competition.

5) installing a new waterproof keyboard is you can easily maintain hygiene and work tension-free of spillage . and will give a good impression.

6) your main work is on the keyboard for taking orders it has to be advance.

In conclusion its a benefit for the business and also it increases your consumers when you provide hygiene and an attractive environment. every business has to incur loss or benefit when you make changes in your business .
