In your biotechnology lab class your team is given the project of increasing the life span of an agriculturally important organism. Your team-mate suggests feeding the organism a drug that inhibits the proteasome, because protein degradation is wasteful of energy, and if we could reduce protein degradation then protein accumulation, growth, and life span would be enhanced. Given what you know about how cells handle proteins, is this likely to be a good approach to increasing longevity?

Answer #1

Yes, aging occurs due to the vicious cycle of Oxidation of cells and Reactive oxygen species, that damages the protein in the cell and accelerate the aging. ROS are generated through the metabolic processes in the cell to produce various products and energy. much of the oxidation load is beared by proteins in the cells. the reaction of free radicals with proteins can result in the alteration or even loss of the amino acids, which in turn negatively affect protein folding and functions.

Two major pathways, autophagy and the ubiquitin proteasome system (UPS), function to remove damaged proteins by degradation (the wrong folds and damaged) to make room for new proteins. proteasome is a large proteolytic complex, that degrade the wrongly folded or degrading proteins, which removes the load of oxidative stress from the cells, ultimatey slow down the aging process.

proteasome also increase the chymotrypsin like activity, which is known to reduce aging process by relieving the oxidative stress. so this idea could work.

    10. Write a one-page summary of the attached paper? INTRODUCTION Many problems can develop in activated sludge operation that adversely affect effluent quality with origins in the engineering, hydraulic and microbiological components of the process. The real "heart" of the activated sludge system is the development and maintenance of a mixed microbial culture (activated sludge) that treats wastewater and which can be managed. One definition of a wastewater treatment plant operator is a "bug farmer", one who controls the aeration...
