A researcher wishes to determine if the use of iPads improves memory. Subjects will use the iPad regularly during a 10-week period of time. After this ten-week period, each subject has their memory tested using a standard memory test. Suppose the scores on this test of memory for all potential subjects using iPads follow a Normal distribution with mean μ and standard deviation σ = 6. Suppose also, that in the general population of all people, scores on the memory test follow a Normal distribution, with mean 50 and standard deviation σ = 4. The researcher, therefore, decides to test the hypotheses

H0: μ = 50, Ha: μ > 50

To do so, the researcher has 100 subjects follow the protocol described above (using iPads regularly for a 10-week period). The mean score for these students is 55.2 and the P-value is less than 0.0001.

It is appropriate to conclude which of the following?

Question 13 options:

None of the answers are correct

The researcher has conclusively proved that the regular use of iPads improves memory.

The researcher has strong evidence that people that use iPads regularly, on average, have higher memory test scores than those that don't use iPads regularly. However, the difference may or may not be important.

The researcher has strong evidence that regular use of iPads improves memory, and because the P-value is so small, the difference must be substantial.

Answer #1

Since P-value < 0.0001, so we reject the null hypothesis.

Conclusion :

The researcher has strong evidence that regular use of iPads improves memory, and because the P-value is so small, the difference must be substantial.

Indicate the correct test procedure and reasoning. A researcher wishes to determine whether listening to music affects students' performance on memory test. He randomly selects 50 students and has each student perform a memory test once while listening to music and once without listening to music. He obtains the mean and standard deviation of the 50 "with music" scores and obtains the mean and standard deviation of the 50 "without music scores" O Two-sample t-test, since the researcher has two...

Some researchers claim that herbal supplements such as ginseng or ginkgo biloba enhance human memory. To test this claim, a researcher selects a sample of n = 25 college students. Each student is given a ginkgo biloba supplement daily for six weeks and then all the participants are given a standardized memory test. For the population, scores on the test are normally distributed with μ = 75 and σ = 5. The sample of n = 25 students had a...

Use a hypothesis test to test the given claim. A test of sobriety involves measuring the subject's motor skills. Twenty randomly selected sober subjects take the test and produce a mean score of 41.0 with a standard deviation of 3.4. At a significance level of 0.01, test the claim that the true mean score for all sober subjects is equal to 39.0. There is not enough information to perform the test. A researcher conducts an experiment on human memory and recruits 15 people to participate in her study. She performs the experiment and analyzes the results. She uses a t-test for a mean and obtains a p-value of 0.17. Which of the following is a reasonable interpretation of her results? This suggests that her experimental treatment has no effect on memory. If there is a treatment effect, the sample size was too small to detect it. She should reject the null...

Pitch memory of amusiacs. A team of psychologists and neuroscientists tested the pitch memory of individuals diagnosed with amusia (a disorder that impacts one's perception of music) and reported their results in Advances in Cognitive Psychology (Vol. 6, 2010). Each in a sample of 17 amusiacs listened to a series of tone pairs and then were asked to determine if the tones were the same or different. In a first trial, the tones were separated by 1 second.
