>When electronic products are discarded after the end of its utility lifespan then e-waste is generated. In common language, e-wastes are the waste whose main component is the electronic devices that are thrown away. E-waste contains deadly materials like lead, cadmium, bromine, radium. Recycling of e-waste is very harmful to human health. Best examples of e-wastes are the CPU of computers and CRTs of old televisions.

>Used CRTs are not regulated as hazardous as long as the several conditions are met which are

1. It should be stored in a roof, floor demarcated or by the wall or labeled container before processing. The container should be made in such a way that the waste material can not mix with the environment.

2. Each container must be labeled with "Used cathode ray tube(s)-contains leaded glass ” or “Leaded glass from televisions or computers.” should also be labeled: “Do not mix with other glass materials.”

3. The transporting container needs a proper name, weight, mailing address, telephone number and description of CRT.

Universal wastes are those which are produced widely by day to day use of the human population including wastes generated from households, different businesses, and agricultural sectors. In the USA the federal system has regulated four types of universal wastes, which are-

  • Batteries
  • Pesticides
  • Mercury-Containing Equipment
  • Lamps

>15 states have abandoned CRTs dump into landfills. Those are California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Columbia, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississipi, New Hampshire, New York.

>The full form of RoHS is the Restriction of Hazardous Substances. It generally regulates and restricts selected materials and substances. EU has regulated that all products in the EU market must pass RoHS compliance. The restricted substances are lead, cadmium, mercury, chromium hexavalent, DEHP, BBP, PBB PBDE, etc. WEEE denoted for Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment. It was enacted by the EU. WEEE mandates the recovery, treatment, and recycling of electronic wastes. All products in the EU market must be passed through the WEEE compliance test. The products also should be marked with the "Wheelie Bin" mark.
