In an open U-tube, the pressure of a 15.5-centimeter water column on one side is balanced by a column of a gasoline on the other side that has a density equal to 1250 kg/m³. What is the height of the gasoline column? (The density of water is 1000 kg/m³).

Gravitational acceleration = g = 9.81 m/s2

Density of water = 1 = 1000 kg/m3

Height of the water column = h1 = 15.5 cm = 0.155 m

Pressure of the water column = P1

Density of gasoline = 2 = 1250 kg/m3

Height of the gasoline column = h2

Pressure of the gasoline column = P2

The pressure due to the water and the gasoline are equal.

h2 = 0.124 m

h2 = 12.4 cm

Height of the gasoline column = 12.4 cm
