Maritime security has often been associated with interstate naval conflicts which occur and piracy. Before 911 it is was just looked as demonstrating sea power. It was essentially concerned with easing the means for trade and protecting safety measures and providing help in avoiding piracy. Prior to 911 coast guard was not a part of national intelligence community, after 911 they became a part of it. Since 911 U.S has spent large amounts on upgrading technology to secure the waterfront from any terrorist attacks. There is an annual security seminar to generate new ideas and means to secure the port. Every person needs to be identified and container security, port, shipment all areas are assessed. Radiation detection devices are used to scan and many new measures are further being initiated.
