Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and other forms of creative work are (sometimes) protected by copyright laws. Please provide a brief description of the economic aspects of these laws and to what extent are they enforceable across national boundaries. How has the advancement of digital technology changed the application of copyright laws and the economics thereof.

The opportunity cost of registering for copyright laws is very high. If we dont register for copyright laws, or creative work would be stolen by others and thus detrimental for our success as somebody else might claim for our creative works.

Foreign work is not defined under the Copyright Act, 1957. In order to protect the creative work across the national boundaries, the country has to become a member of the international convention of the copyright and neighbouring rights.

The advancement of digital technology has changed the application of copyright laws :

  • It will result in more infringements.
  • The new digital era would prove the present definition of copyrightable work even more narrow.
  • Fair use doctrine will allow the private unauthorized use of copyrighted works.
