Explain fully the concept of “Twin Deficits” and use this concept to explain why the cause of the US trade deficit with China is largely due to American wars across the globe.
The " Twin Deficits " hypothesis tells us that there is a strong linkage between a nation's government budget balance and current account balance .
Let us see the proof of this theory :
When ( Tax - Government expenditure ) or ( T - G ) is negative we have a budget deficit .
We know , Y = C + I + G + NX
S ( savings ) = Y - C - T
So, S = I + G + NX - T
Therefore , NX = ( S - I ) + ( T - G ) [ ( S - I ) = private saving - investment ]
NX ( current account ) = ( S - I ) + budget balance
This equation proves that current account will fall when there is a budget deficit . ( G > T )
American war across the globe causes government expenditure to increase than revenue , this is because a war means more supplies required and the government has to maintain the army . Thus , this compels US to import more goods and services from foreign countries . Also production and exports fall due to resources used up in war . This results in trade deficit with China . US imports more from China and exports a fewer goods . NX ( Export - Import )

Drawing upon Griswold's arguments, discuss the validity of the following propositions and fully explain your reasoning: a) The U.S. deficit in trade of goods and services is an important indicator of declining U.S. competitiveness in the world; b) The single biggest factor explaining growing U.S. trade deficits is the unfair trade policies of China, Japan and Germany; America’s Misunderstood Trade Deficit Myth: “America Is Losing Its Competitiveness” The “competitiveness” myth has gone into remission in recent years. Since the Cuomo...
4. Explain the historical relationship between the US trade deficit and budget deficit? Why do some economists consider this to be problem- atic? Why do some economists consider the (opposite) relationship for China to be problematic? Why do some researchers believe this has not been a historical cause of worry for the US? (You may have to do some research on the last part and some reading ahead on the first). 5. Explain what is meant by covered interest parity...
Explain why free trade is important to the US and to its trading partners. Why does the imposition of tariffs lead to trade wars, and why are trade wars challenging to countries and to the world economy?
Suppose CHINA is fixing its currency, the renninbi, to the US dollar. Explain why an increase in the real demand for money in the US (foreign country) will cause a decrease in the Money supply in China. Use a graph of the Money Market and the Foreign Exchange market to support your answer.
6 24 2 8. Then use the following information to show the impact of a change in exchange rate on the trade balance Suppose that there are two goods sold in China and in the U.S When the exchange rate is 1USD = 6 yuan a car cost $50,000 in US and 0,000 yuan in China and the price of a shirt is $20 in U.S and 120 yuan in China. US imports the shirt and exports the cars 30...
Explain the function of the goods and services market and the factors of production market in the Circular Flow Model. Explain both real and money flows and the role of prices in both the product and factor markets. Using an example, explain why the production possibilities frontier is bowed outward. Use the production possibilities frontier to explain fully economic growth, efficiency, and inefficiency. Suppose that China can use cheaper labour to produce every product more cheaply than Canada. Explain why...
Use the Law of Demand to explain why all consumers must receive a surplus whenever they purchase more than one unit of a product but may receive no surplus if only one unit is bought. Make up a numerical example to illustrate. Provide two reasons why consumer surplus must increase when the price of a product falls? Explain fully why taxing a product leads to deadweight loss. Use appropriate graphs to explain why the deadweight loss is greater the more...
how do you explain the concept “public opinion” in your own words? Why is public opinion important in American democracy?
