Accreditation is a voluntary process, where the accredited organization compares itself to best practices in their industry, against recognized standards, and demonstrate evidence that they have implemented the particular standards in their practice. It is conducted by a third-party entity. E.g.: a healthcare organization will need accreditation from behavioral health and social service agencies to demonstrate their accountability to their clients and funders.

Licensing is an involuntary process with the aim to ensure customer well being and public safety. Organizations need licensing to offer certain services. E.g.: if a healthcare organization needs to operate an adult group home, it is mandatory they get licensed as per the NY State law. Social workers need a clinical license to provide psychotherapy to their clients, without supervision.

Certification is a way to demonstrate the concerned organization’s capabilities to provide a certain set of specialized services or programs. Certification is mostly voluntary, can become mandatory for certain specific services. E.g.: healthcare organizations looking to provide Family therapy in Nebraska, need certification in Functional Family Therapy to do so.

While accreditation and certification are voluntary credentials, licensing is involuntary. Only organizations, programs or agencies can get accreditation while licensing and certification can be given to individuals, programs, facilities, agencies or organizations.
