You are interested in the effect of energy drinks on the amount of hours of sleep students get each night. Specifically, you expect that energy drinks will decrease the average amount of sleep a student gets. To investigate this, you gather a sample of 15 students that drink energy drinks each night for a week and get their average reported hours of sleep per night and compare it to the average amount of sleep for all students. The data are below:

Students w/ Energy Drinks

All Students

x ̅=6.8

µ=8.2

s = 1.5

Do you reject or fail to reject your hypothesis? Why?

We reject, because our test statistic falls within the rejection rejection

We fail to reject, because our test statistic does not fall within the rejection region

We reject, because our test statistic is not different from the critical value.

We fail to reject, because the test statistic is different from the critical value.

Below are the null and alternative Hypothesis,
Null Hypothesis, H0: μ = 8.2
Alternative Hypothesis, Ha: μ < 8.2

Test statistic,
t = (xbar - mu)/(s/sqrt(n))
t = (6.8 - 8.2)/(1.5/sqrt(15))
t = -3.615

Rejection Region
This is left tailed test, for α = 0.05 and df = 14
Critical value of t is -1.761.
Hence reject H0 if t < -1.761

We reject, because our test statistic falls within the rejection rejection

    Sleep: Assume the general population gets an average of 7 hours of sleep per night. You randomly select 45 college students and survey them on their sleep habits. From this sample, the mean number of hours of sleep is found to be 6.89 hours with a standard deviation of 0.40 hours. You claim that college students get less sleep than the general population. That is, you claim the mean number of hours of sleep for all college students is less...

    Sleep (Raw Data, Software Required): Assume the general population gets an average of 7 hours of sleep per night. You randomly select 35 college students and survey them on the number of hours of sleep they get per night. The data is found in the table below. You claim that college students get less sleep than the general population. That is, you claim the mean number of hours of sleep for all college students is less than 7 hours. Test...

    4. Suppose it is known that American adults sleep an average of 7.8 hours daily. You suspect that college students sleep less than this on average, so you collect a random sample of fifteen students at NCAT and get the following data on their typical daily sleep amount (in hours): 6.7 4.5 6.4 8.6 5.5 8.2 5.9 7.5 4.4 6.0 6.3 8.3 7.3 5.7 10.1 (a) Use this sample to see if there is sufficient evidence to conclude that the...

    ONLY a and b at the end Q8: New York is known as "the city that never sleeps". Suppose the amount of sleep (in hours) is nearly normal. A random sample of 25 New Yorkers were asked how much sleep they get per night. Statistical summaries of these data are shown below. Do these data provide strong evidence that New Yorkers sleep less than 8 hours a night on average? Assume the significant level is α-0.05. in max 257.73 0.77...

    The average adult is supposed to get 8 hours of sleep a night. A "sleep habits" survey answered by 28 randomly selected New Yorkers contained the question "How much sleep do you get per night?" The sample average was 7.75 hours, with a corresponding sample standard deviation of 0.8 hours. Conduct a hypothesis test to see if there is evidence that New Yorkers (who live, after all, in "the city that never sleeps") on average get less than 8 hours...

    Suppose we measure how much sleep students in first and second year at UVic get per night. A sample of 21 first year students slept an average of 7.9 hours per night with a standard deviation of 1.3 hours. A sample of 16 second year students slept an average of 6.8 hours per night with a standard deviation of 2.1 hours. Students who get more sleep get better grades. You want to estimate the hours of sleep per night that a college student gets. You select 29 students; on average they slept 6.2 hours with a standard deviation of 1.8 hours. The standard error is 0.334. In order to be 90% confident of an estimate of the population mean, what is the critical value? A- 1.640 B- 1.960 C- 1.699 D- 1.701 E- 2.064

    Jessica knows that the adult population gets, on average, eight hours of sleep each night. A hypothesis test can help her see if college students are different from the adult population. Jessica tabulated that her sample of 101 students got an average of 6.9 hours of sleep each night, with a standard deviation of 2.5. Using the data provided and the formula below, what is the t-statistic that Jessica calculates? Answer choices are rounded to the hundredths place.

    A survey was conducted to determine whether hours of sleep per night are independent of age. A sample of individuals was asked to indicate the number of hours of sleep per night with categorical options: fewer than 6 hours, 6 to 6.9 hours, 7 to 7.9 hours, and 8 hours or more. Later in the survey, the individuals were asked to indicate their age with categorical options: age 39 or younger and age 40 or older. Sample data follow Age...
