You hook up electrodes to an ionic liquid. You find that positive ions flow to the right and negative ions flow to the left. What is true of the electric current?

Positive ions contribute a current to the left and negative ions contribute a current to the right.
Both the positive and negative ions contribute a current to the right.

Answer #1

In an ionic liquid there is two types of ion, cation and anion. Cation is positively charged ion and move along cathode and anion is negatively charged ion and it moves along anode. Now if we consider the direction of current is the direction of motion of positive ion then it will be must opposite direction of motion of anion. So net current will be for both positive ion i.e, cation and negative ion i.e, anion. By convention the direction of electric current is from positive electrode to negative electrode. In the question positive ions flows to the right, so negative electrode must be at right. Then our answer will be both positive and negative ion contribute to a current to the right.
