(a) A car trip unfolds as follows. It took 15 minutes to get from your driveway
to the highway, a distance of five kilometres, what with traffic and stoplights. Once on
the highway, you maintained a constant speed of 120 km/h for one hour. Determine your
average speed (throughout the time from the start of the trip to the end of the first hour
of highway cruising).
(b) As soon as the hour ended, you encountered a long construction zone and your speed
dropped to 30 km/h. You persisted at this speed for 30 minutes. Determine your average
speed (throughout the time from the start of the trip to the end of this half hour).
(c) After the painfully slow construction zone, you were caught up in a gigantic traffic
jam. Inching forward at 8 km/h, it took one half hour to reach an exit, which you took, got
back on the highway in the other direction and returned home in 72 minutes according to
your watch. Determine your average speed on the return trip.
(d) (i) Determine the total time that you spent travelling.
(ii) Determine the total distance that you travelled (away and back).
(iii) Determine your average speed throughout the trip.
(iv) Determine your net displacement throughout the trip.
(v) Determine your average velocity throughout the trip.
