Researchers were interested in the effects of maternal stress on infants' production of stress hormones. They measures the level of the hormone "cortisol" in infant saliva when all the infants were 9 months old. The mothers were categorized according to the amount and type of stress they experienced while pregnant. One group of mothers reported no extraordinary stressors while pregnant. One group of mothers were living in the New York City area when the terrorist attack on the twin towers happened on Sept 11, 2001. They were all between 2 and 4 months pregnant with the infant in the study during that day. The third group of mothers were refugees fleeing a war in their country. They all lived in a refugee camp for the entire time that they were pregnant with the infant in the study but were resettled in the United States within 2 months of the child's birth. The researchers hypothesized that chronic (refugees) or severe (9/11) stressors during pregnancy would impact the stress hormone production in the child long after birth. What type of test should they use to test this hypothesis?

an independent samples t-test

a dependent samples t-test

an ANOVA

a single sample t-test

a z-test

Answer #1

Here we are comparing more than 2 groups of pregnant mother.

The researchers hypothesized that chronic (refugees) or severe (9/11) stressors during pregnancy would impact the stress hormone production in the child long after birth as comapared to normal case.

We have to use an ANOVA test here

The infants were matched in pairs based on their age in days at the start of the study and based on the status of being...

New research from King’s College London has found that maternal stress before and during pregnancy could affect a baby’s brain development. In their study published in Biological Psychiatry, MRC Doctoral Researcher in Perinatal Imaging and Health, Alexandra Lautarescu and Head of Advanced Neuroimaging, Professor Serena Counsell, for the first time looked at the relationship between maternal stress and brain development in 251 premature babies. They found evidence for impaired development of a white matter tract, the uncinate fasciculus, in babies...
