Now we wish to determine how many of the 10,000 eggs can be expected to hatch in 35 days or fewer.

Recall that μ = 35 so___A___% of the area under the normal curve will be to the left of μ = 35 and___B___% will be to the right of μ = 35. Therefore, ___C____% of the 10,000 chicks can be expected to hatch in 35 days or less. In other words, we expect ____D_____eggs to hatch during this time period.

Answer #1

Recall that μ = 35 so 50% of the area under the normal curve will be to the left of μ = 35 and 50% will be to the right of μ = 35. Therefore, 50%  of the 10,000 chicks can be expected to hatch in 35 days or less.

In other words, we expect 5000 eggs to hatch during this time period.

    c. We can convert the right tail area o 276 L02) to a left-hand area of 1.0-.02-.98, or 98%. (See the picture to the right.) The z-score for an area of .9800 is 2.05 (actually, this corresponds to the area closest to .9800 in the table-9798). We'll set the marker, then, 2.05 standard deviations above the mean. Since a standard deviation here is 10 days, this means we'll set the mark at 120+ 2.05(10) 140.5 days. 9800 120 0 19....

Standardizing Raw Scores to Find Probabilities Earlier, we asked "How likely or unlikely is a male foot length of more than 13 inches?" We were unable to solve the problem, because 13 inches didn't happen to be one of the values featured in the Empirical Rule. Now that we know about standardizing raw scores, let's use standardization and the standard normal tableto find the the probability Recall that male foot lengths have a normal distribution, with y = 11 and...
