Concerning the preparation of the methylmagnesium iodide, why do you need to add the remaining methyl iodide slowly once the reaction got started?

The preparation of grignard reagent is done by adding methyl iodide to Magnesium metal. Methyl iodide is highly reactive with Magnesium and the reaction is highly exothermic. If you add the methyl iodide at a time, it might result in catching fire or the glass container might break apart due to high amount of heat released.

Hence methyl iodide is added slowly to the reaction mixture.
