Goals of Procedure:

Predict:

1. Build a capacitor with Aluminum foil and paper. Measure its capacitance.

2. Either vary the separation distance or the capacitor area and verify experimentally, whether the uniformity of the electric field holds for your capacitor.

Prediction:

1. Find an equation for the capacitance C from a parallel-plate capacitor given K as the dielectric constant for a filler medium.

2. Make a graph of the capacitance versus plate area.

3. Make a graph of the capacitance versus plate separation distance.

Please help with prediction.

Exercise 7.4 Provide a model for the capacitance C, given the area of the Aluminum foil A, the thickness of the paper d, and the dielectric constant K of the paper. Note that the capacitance only depends on the geometry of the capacitor, not on the amount of voltage that you apply, or the charge that is on one of the plate. How does it depend on area and separation distance? Exercise 7.4 Provide a model for the capacitance C,...

Consider a plane parallel-plate capacitor made of two strips of aluminum foil separated by a layer of paraffin-coated paper. Each strip of foil and paper is 4.80 cm wide. The foil is 0.00400 mm thick, and the paper is 0.0200 mm thick and has a dielectric constant of 3.70. What length should the strips be if a capacitance of 7.50 ✕ 10−8 F is desired? As part of an honors project proposal, a student wanted to build a high voltage capacitor by coating a five gallon paint bucket inside and out with aluminum foil. If the bucket were flattened, this would produce a dielectric-filled, parallel-plate capacitor with plate area of 0.9m2, plate separation of 1mm, and dielectric constant 2.3 (polyethylene). A homemade Van der Graaff generator will easily charge this capacitor to 75,000V. How much energy would it contain at this voltage?

In the first part of this lab, you will build your own parallel plate capacitor by with two aluminum foil sheets and on or more transparency sheets in between them. If the each aluminum sheet is 10 cm x 10 cm, and a piece of transparency is ~0.1mm thick, what is the capacitance of the 2 foil sheets separated by 1 transparency sheet? Multi-Layer Capacitor Use MATLAB to plot the capacitance of a parallel-plate capacitor versus the separation distance d e [0.01, 1]mm between its two plates (take a suitable discretization step value). The capacitor has an area S = 1 cm-. The dielectric material between the two plates has relative permiativity Er that gradually increases from the positive plate along the distance d, until reaching the negative plate. The equation for Er is given by Er = 1+x where x is the...

Consider a cylindrical capacitor like that shown in Fig. 24.6. Let d = rb − ra be the spacing between the inner and outer conductors. (a) Let the radii of the two conductors be only slightly different, so that d << ra. Show that the result derived in Example 24.4 (Section 24.1) for the capacitance of a cylindrical capacitor then reduces to Eq. (24.2), the equation for the capacitance of a parallel-plate capacitor, with A being the surface area of...
