A 24yo male discovers a roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides) in his stool. He returned from a camping trip through rural South America 4 months ago. He is asymptomatic. If he is not treated for this infection and does no further traveling, what can be expected to happen as a result of this infection?

Ascaris lumbricoides are intestinal worms. Their adult forms reside in the lumen of small intestine of their human hosts. Being parasitic, they draw nutrition from semi-digested food. These parasites are more prevalent in warmer climates than colder climates.

It is believed that about 85% of the affected patients do not show symptoms for the presence of roundworms in their body. In a young male, who is asymptomatic for this parasite, the worms would be retained for a long period and the patient would show retarded growth and will be malnourished.
