Answer #1

Answer. Journal Entry for sale of gift certificates is as follows:

Cash A/c

To Gift Certificates Liability

For Example: A retailer sold a Gift card or Gift Certificate for cash of $5000 to a customer, it shall be recorded as follows:

Particulars Debit($) Credit($)
Cash A/c   5000
To Gift Certificates Liability 5000

Cash is debited as it is received by the customer there and then, Gift Certificate is a liability as it is redeemable by the customer later on. Therefore, revenue is recorded when it is presented to the retailer later on.
