In a 13C NMR without 1H decoupling applied, a CH4 group will appear as a singlet or what other answers is possible? Please show your work. Thank you
Since the spin value is also same of 13C NMR as of proton NMR. Total spin value is considered to be (2nI+1). Here I = 1/2 , so total spin value (n+1). Means in 13 NMR peak the carbon environment will be affected by magnetic field of attached protons, so the single peak of C signal will split according to the magnetic environment faced by it. There are 4 protons attached to it, so it will split into 4+1=5 peaks. The CH4 group will not be appeared as singlet in 13 C NMR . It will be appeared as Quintet in pattern.

3. (a)
From the spectral data (1H, 13C NMR, IR, MS) you were given,
identify the structure of your product. Explain why you chose your
particular product based on the spectroscopic data.
(b)
Fully assign the 1H NMR spectrum of your product (i.e. determine
which peaks in the 1H NMR correspond to which hydrogens in the
product)
(c) Now
work backwards (or consult the NMR spectra of the two reactants)
and determine the structure of the two unknown reactants.

As pointed out, the structure is C10H14
and the answered offered had 11 carbons.
8. Sev eral students take a 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra for an unknown compound They each propose something about the identity of the unknown.
