Tourism is often referred to as a “smokestacks industry” because of the misperception that it doesn’t create any environmental impacts. Does the same misperception exist for the social impacts of tourism? Is tourism an equalizer among rich & poor, or is it a dividing line?

Tourism has both negative and positive impacts when social impacts are considered. Tourism might be a platform for people to understand and experience various cultures and adapt them but people concentrate on what they can snatch from that region rather than adapt it. In the same way tourism is said to be a connection between all classes of a society but still tourism creates economic and social barriers between rich and poor and hence it is a dividing line which always shows some difference between the both. It cannot be said as a smokestacks industry for social factors but is a barrier between rich and poor.
