You have worked at the same company with your best friend for the last 10 years—in fact, he told you about the job and got you the interview.
He works in the marketing department and is up for a promotion to marketing director—a position he has been wanting for a long time. You work in sales, and on your weekly conference call, the new marketing director—someone recruited from outside the company—joins you.
Your boss explains that although the formal announcement hasn’t been made yet, the company felt it was important to get the new director up to speed as quickly as possible. He will be joining the company in two weeks, after completing his two weeks’ notice with his current employer. Should you tell your friend what happened?
Do you tell your friend the truth or remain loyal to the person who swore you to secrecy?

Question

1-Compare the alternatives, based on consequences for all stakeholders, duties, rights, principles, and implications for personal integrity and character (Recognize the type of conflict you are dealing with. E.g., Truth versus Loyalty; Short-Term versus Long-Term; Justice versus Mercy; Individual versus Community).

2- Make a decision (chooses an action) and justify your decision (e.g., Ends-Based; Rules-Based; The Golden Rule).

Answer:

No, we should not tell our friend what has happened. Because this will not be helpful for the friend, as well as the organization and my boss. This information leak will create a problem for all who are related with this information i.e. my friend, his manager, my boss and me. So we will not disclose this information.

No, we do not tell our friend the truth or remain loyal to the person who swore us to secrecy because this is not ethical to tell the truth to my friend. The truth will have severed adverse impact in the business and all will be severely impacted from this truth. The truth will come on its way at the right time with the organizational announcement. This is the ethical and professional approach for any individual in the corporate work place.

  1. Telling the truth will create consequences for all stakeholders, duties, rights, principles, and implications for personal integrity and character. The truth will have consequential impact on all the stakeholders and all stakeholders will get impacted with leak of this information. This will be against the duties of the employee to leak the secret information in the business with friends and colleagues. This is not the right to hare such secrete information with the friends and colleagues. Principally we should maintain the value of the work place and should demonstrate the integrity in the work place. The personal character and integrity will be highly demised if we speak out the truth to friend. Hence we should not speak the truth and remain loyal t the person who has shared the business secrete to us.

The type of conflict that we are dealing with is - Truth versus Loyalty: the conflict is that shall we remain loyal to the stakeholder who have communicated us the secret information of new marketing director appointment or shall we speak the truth to our friend who have helped us in life and in friendship for more than 10 years. The conflict is pushing on either side. But we would like to select the loyalty approach instead of truth option.

2- We will be making a decision by The Golden Rule – Remain loyal and will not share the secret information with friend. The justification for this is that truth will create the problem and issues for all stakeholders and all will be in problem due to leak of this secret information. So we will remain loyal and will not share secret information to friend.
