During the evolutionary synthesis, biologists conclusively identified natural selection, gene flow, genetic drift, and mutation as the major causes of evolution within species. Using the scientific definition of evolution, explain how these forces cause populations, species, and higher taxa to evolve.
Evolution is defined as change in genetic makeup of population
over generations.
Population may change because of forces of evolution. It
includes
- Natural Selection
- Genetic Drift
- Mutations
- Gene Flow.
Evolution because of natural selection depends on fitness. It means
individuals with more heritable traits and which makes them more
fit will survive in given environment. It means individual who is
better to survive and reproduce will produce more offspring than
other members of the population.
Genetic drift results in evolution by chance events due to sampling
error. It randomly select alleles for the next generation.
Mutations are the sources genetic variation. All mutations do no
leads to evolution. Therefore, mutations from one generation to the
another depends on other factors such as natural selection.
Gene flow means movement of genes out or in of a population. It is
because of movement of individual organisms or their gametes such
as eggs and sperm.
During the evolutionary synthesis, biologists conclusively identified natural selection, gene flow, genetic drift, and mutation as...
Of the following evolutionary forces; crossing over, directional selection, mutation, speciation, stabilizing selection, sex, gene flow and genetic drift which promote or maintain genetic variation within a population? a) crossing over only b) directional selection and sex c) directional selection, mutation, and speciation d) crossing over, mutation, sex, and gene flow e) only sex Of the following evolutionary forces, crossing over, directional selection, mutation, speciation, stabilizing selection, sex, gene flow and genetic drift which promote genetic differentiation (divergence) among populations?...
Describe the four basic causes of evolution: natural selection, mutation, genetic drift, and gene flow. The paper should be 400- 500 words (~ 1 double-spaced, APA formatted page). Refer to the attached document for the grading rubric.
Select the option that contains three evolutionary forces a) natural selection, genetic drift, gene flow b) somatic cells, chromosomes, natural selection c) non-random mating, genomes, variation d) proteins, genetic drift, alleles e) natural selection, DDT resistance, environment
Questino 7. How I genetic drift different from natural selection? A. Natural Selection occurs because some alleles confer higher fitness, whereas genetic drift occurs because of sampling error. B. Natural selection has a stronger effect in large population, whereas genetic drift acts primarily in small populations. C. Natural selection is a mechanism of evoltion, whereas genetic drift is not a mechnaism but an outcome of evolution. D. Natrual selection tends to cause very rapid evolution whereas gentic drift tends to...
5. Using the following evolutionary concepts (speciation, macroevolution, microevolution, gene flow, genetic drift, and natural selection), represent your idea of how these evolutionary concepts are related to another. Use lines to connect and show the relationship between concepts. Write a word or short phrase by each line to specify the relationship between cocnepts.
Technical: Create a concept map with these terms: genetic drift, adaptation, mutation, gene flow, natural selection, inbreeding. Make a minimum of 5 connections Reflection: One paragraph: Think of an example that you have witnessed where an environment seemed out of balance in terms of # of autotrophs, or heterotrophs. If you cannot remember a situation where you noticed this, think about your neighborhood. Look outside, what do you see in terms of balance of trophic levels? Include the following in...
are these correct Stopping which of these evolutionary forces can lead to speciation? A. genetic drift OB. gene flow OC. natural selection OD. sexual selection O E. mutations QUESTION 2 Speciation is most commonly a result of A. copatry OB. antipatry OC. allopatry OD. sympatry O E. sexual selection
help 4.) Darwin's Theory of Natural Selection stated that: a.) At one time the earth held all the species and each catastrophic event would destroy certain species - survivors would repopulate the world b.) Environmental pressures and internal needs bring about changes in body form and function and this is passed on to their offspring c.) Process in which individuals with favorable inherited traits are more likely to survive and reproduce at a higher rate than other individuals 5.) Convergent...
1. What happens to the within-group and between-group genetic variation of the population when gene flow occurs in the population? 2. What happens to the within-group and between-group genetic variation of the population when genetic drift occurs in the population? 3. When only one type of allele at a locus is found for a gene, what is this called? 4. What happens to a genetic variation within a population when natural selection is acting on a population? 5.
