4. Build a document containing the following:
a. Place a heading at the top center of the document in all capital letters containing:
MY BACKGROUND
b. In a paragraph containing complete sentences of correctly spelled words, please describe the following about yourself:
(1) Where you were born (city, state, country)
(2) What brought you to Middlesex County College
(3) What you are studying at Middlesex County College
(4) What you like to do in your spare time when you are not going to classes, doing homework, or working
c. Be sure that all the text is word wrapped (turn it on) so it looks like a normal paragraph.
5. After finishing the paragraph, do the following:
a. Insert a blank line by pressing the Enter key.
b. Type the following below the blank line:
Your Name, CSC107-xx, Windows, Notepad, MyInfo.txt
(substitute your own real name)
(substitute the “xx” with your section code)
6. Save the document by doing the following:
a. Click on the File pull down menu.
b. Click on the Save As option
c. Change the drive letter to the drive appropriate of your storage device by clicking on the
pull down menu and selecting it.
d. Save the file by doing the following:
(1) In the File Name text box, erase what is in there
(2) Type in the file name of MyInfo
(3) Leave the extension as .txt in the text box below the file name
(4) Click on the Ok button
7. Print the contents of the file by doing the following:
a. Open the File pull down menu
b. Click on the Print option
c. Click on the Ok button
8. Close Notepad.
B. WordPad Activity:
1. For Windows 7 users, open the WordPad application by doing the following:
a. Click on the Start button at the bottom left of your screen
b. Select Programs
c. Select Accessories
d. Select WordPad
2. For Windows 8 users, open the WordPad application by doing the following:
a. Click on the Microsoft button at the bottom left of your screen
b. Select the down pointing arrow at the bottom left side of all the applications.
c. Scroll to the right to select the Windows Accessories group.
Select WordPad
3. For Windows 10 users, open the Notepad application by doing the following:
a. Click on the Microsoft button at the bottom left of your screen
b. Click on the All Apps group button immediately above the Microsoft button just used
c. Scroll down the list on the left side and click on the Windows Accessories group
d. Click on the drop down list on the right side of the Windows Accessories group
e. Scroll down the list in the Windows Accessories group.
f. Select WordPad
4. Build a document containing the following:
a. Place a bolded, italicized, and underlined heading at the top center of the document in all
upper case letters containing:
COMPUTER FILE EXTENSIONS
b. Press the enter key after and below the above heading to create a blank line.
c. Write out each of the following. Be sure to include both the numbers and the statements,
one under the other, (single line spaced) the way they appear here:
1. Paint files have a .bmp extension.
2. Notepad files have a .txt extension.
3. WordPad files have a .rtf extension.
4. Word files have a .doc or .docx extension.
5. Excel files have a .xls or .xlsx extension.
6. Access files have .mdb and .ldb or .accdb extensions.
7. PowerPoint files have a .ppt or .pptx extension.
8. Internet image file format extensions include: .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .art, .png.
9. Sound file formats include: .wav, .mp3.
10. Web pages have extensions of either .html or .htm in most cases.

e. Italicize all the extension types of each of the ten items above. Examples: .bmp .txt .rtf

C. Folder Management Activity:
1. On your portable storage device (the E:\ drive, or the F:\ drive, etc.), build the following folder at
the root level of the device: CSC107
2. Double click on the CSC107 folder you just built and build the following folders within the
CSC107 folder:
a. CSC107Access
b. CSC107Concepts
c. CSC107Excel
d. CSC107PowerPoint
e. CSC107Windows
f. CSC107Word
2. Copy the Notepad file (MyInfo) you have built and paste it into the CSC107Windows folder.
3. Copy the WordPad file (FileExtensions) you have built and paste it into the CSC107Windows folder.
4. Open a new file in Word.
5. Go into Windows Explorer (in the Accessories group) and display the contents (the two file
names) of the CSC107Windows folder.
6. Do a screen print of the CSC107Windows folder (showing the names of the two files you put in
there) and paste it into the new Word file you just opened.
7. In the Word file, below the pasted screen print of the CSC107Windows folder, do the following:
a. Insert a blank line below the screen print.
b. Below the blank line, put the following information:
Your Full Name, CSC107-xx, Windows, CSC107Windows folder
(substitute the “xx” with your section code)
(substitute your own real name)
c. Insert two blank lines.
d. Save the file by doing the following CSC107Word folder by doing the following:
(1) Select the CSC107Word folder
(2) In the File Name text box, erase what is in there
(3) Type in the file name of ScreenPrints
(4) Leave the extension as .docx in the text box below the file name
(5) Click on the Ok button
e. Minimize the ScreenPrints document
8. Go into Windows Explorer (in the Accessories group) and display the contents of the CSC107
folder on your storage device (the E:\ drive, or the F:\ drive, etc.) so that the list of the folders
that you built earlier are all visible.
9. Do a screen print of the CSC107 folder contents on your storage device with all the folder names you built visible and paste it into the ScreenPrints file below everything else already in the ScreenPrints document..
10. In the ScreenPrints document, below the pasted screen print of the root level display of the
folders you built, do the following:
a. Insert a blank line below the screen print.
b. Below the blank line, put the following information:
Your Full Name, CSC107-xx, Windows, CSC107 Folder
(substitute the “xx” with your section code)
(substitute your own real name)
c. Resave the ScreenPrints file.
11. Print the contents of the ScreenPrints document.
12. Close the ScreenPrints document and the Word application.
