I am doing a report on the synthesis of Dulcin from Phenetidine, Potassium Cyanate, and Acetic Acid. Potassium Cyanate reacts with Acetic Acid to form isocyanic acid, which then reacts with Phenetidine to produce Dulcin.

1) Why is it important to add acetic acid to the reaction mixture? What would happen if you forgot to add it?

2) Is it necessary to produce isocyanic acid in the reaction flask, or could it be preformed and added to the reaction flask later?
