The M type of receptor talks to the parasol ganglion cells. M-type retinal ganglion cells oriented to the magnocellular layers of the lateral geniculate nucleus. These cells are called parasol retinal ganglion cells, which is based on the large sizes of their dendritic trees and cell bodies. Only few percent of all retinal ganglion cells are parasol cells. It receives inputs from relatively many rods and cones cells. They have fast conduction velocity, but are not very sensitive to changes in color.

On the other hand P-type retinal ganglion cells project to the parvocellular layers of the lateral geniculate nucleus. These cells called midget retinal ganglion cells, which is due to small sizes of their dendritic trees and cell bodies. Large percentageof all retinal ganglion cells are midget cells in the parvocellular pathway. They exhibits very slow conduction velocity, and respond to changes in color They consider simple receptive fields, the center either ON or OFF.
