In the Middle Ages theater represented a wide variety of genres and topics. In the Middle Ages some of the most common genres of plays include plays of morality, farces, masks and drama. Medieval drama started with plays on the religious and moral themes. An early prominent medieval playwright was 10th century Hrotsvit of Gardensheim. Some other notable examples of medieval plays include the N-Town plays, the morality play, Everyman, the play set to music by Hildegard of Bingen, OrdoVirtutum.

Hrotsvit, a historian and aristocratic canoness from northern Germany in the 10th century, was an important playwright in early Medieval times. Hrotsvit wrote six plays that she had based on comedies by Terence. Although the comedies of Terence depict ordinary human subjects and circumstances involving marriage, sex and love, Hrostvitput has a moral and religious focus on the plays of Terence to escape church criticism.

Stylized rituals can involve wearing different clothes and body paint in preparation for hunting, ceremonial re-enactment of killing (either symbolic or lit- eral, as in the case of a Siberian bear feast, men- tioned later), and prescribed practices for greeting returning hunters, eating meat, and disposing of the remaining portions of the killing. In the view of sub-Arctic American Indian hunters, tossing animal remains to the dogs instead of following conventional ritual may result in animals fleeing hunting grounds, firearms being ineffective, or spreading disease in the human population.
