A 5g BB is shot into a 500g wooden block. The BB travels horizontally and the block rests on a horizontal surface. The block is initially at rest. The BB embeds in the block. No friction between the surface and the block. If the BB was traveling at 400 m/s just as it strikes the block, what is the velocity of the combined block/BB as it moves off.

Answer #1

Given ,

Mass of the BB,

Initial velocity of the BB,

Mass of the block,

As the block is initially at rest,

Initial velocity of the block,

The BB embeds in the block.

Let's the final velocity of combined system be

According to the linear momentum conservation,

Putting all those values,

So velocity of combined block is 3.96 m/s.
