Why is it that HClO is a stronger acid than HBrO, when HBr is a stronger acid than HCl? I thought that more electronegative atoms created stronger bonds with hydrogen and so therefore made it more difficult for those acids to dissociate.
This is because of the fact that chlorine is more electronegative than bromine. The electronegativity difference of Cl and O is less than that in the case of Br and O. So, the BrO bond is more polar. And hence, the H-BrO bond is stronger than H-ClO. Also, the resulting negative charge on the conjugate base ClO- is more stable than on the base BrO- due to the high electronegativity of chlorine. As a result, HClO is a stronger acid.
HCl bond is stronger than HBr bond. So, the former requires more energy to dissociate and hence dissociates less.
