Answer #1

Deep drawing is the process when the drawing height is more than half the diameter of the cup. The sidewalls of the cup may increase in thickness due to the radial flow of the material. It can be said as the combination of drawing with stretching. It is generally used for ductile materials. Some times double action deep drawing is used for cups with more height.

Clearance: It is the difference between Die opening diameter and Punch diameter. It is necessary for the flow of the material between the die and the punch otherwise shearing of the plate may occur at the bottom of the punch. Without providing the clearance, a fracture may occur at the flange.  It is generally termed as

Draw clearance = Die opening diameter - Punch Diameter = 2.5t

Holding Force: the blank is held using the blank holder when drawn into the die. Appropriate blank holder pressure is required for good surface and proper thickness in the final drawn cup. An insufficient or extra holding pressure may cause different kinds of defects in the product like earing at the end edges, fracture on the corners, wrinkling on the flange part. It depends on the wrinkling tendency of the cup.

Usages: Many products are manufactured using deep drawing like, Kitchen sink made of steel, metal bottle like copper, deep metal tub, deep cups, metal tanks used for storing liquids, cylindrical vessels with flat bottom etc.
