Which of the following statements is/are correct for performing the microscale distillation? (Select all that apply.)
a. |
Drops should be collected at a rate of 1 drop per 1 or 2 seconds. |
|
b. |
The pipe cleaner must be kept moist on the condenser tube. |
|
c. |
The body of the flask should be filled just up to the neck. |
|
d. |
The final distillation temperature should be recorded after half of the original volume has been collected. |
|
e. |
The temperature probe tip should be inserted so that it reaches down into the liquid compound. |
a.] For microscale distillation, good separation can be attained at the rate of 1 drop per 20-30 seconds. Therefore, this statement is not accurate.
b.] A wet/moist pipe cleaner acts as aa good cooling device and hence is used a lot of times. Hence, statement b is correct.
c.] The flask should never be more than half full or more than two third full to leave room for boiling. So this statement is wrong.
d.] Final temperature can be recorded until 90% of the original compound has been collected. Let 10% be left behind to make sure the flask doesn't run completely dry. This statement is wrong.
e.] The tip of the thermometer should reach into the lower part of the Hickman head i.e. the collection well. You should be measuring the temperature of the vapour and hence it shouldn't reach into the liquid compound. This statement is incorrect.

1. Procedure A. Lithium 2,6-dimethylphenoxide. In a 300-ml. flask, equipped with a magnetic stirrer and a reflux condenser and flushed with nitrogen, are placed 150 ml. of toluene (freshly distilled from sodium), 1.40 g. (0.202 mole) of lithium metal (Note 1) and 25.0 g. (0.205 mole) of resublimed 2,6-dimethylphenol. The mixture is heated under reflux with stirring for 36 hours; a nitrogen atmosphere is maintained for the reflux period (Note 2). The condenser is replaced by a distillation head with...
PREPARATION OF PHARMACEUTICALS - Fischer Esterification Reactions Q: Calculate the expected mass of both methyl salicylate and aspirin assuming 100% yield. EXPERIMENT7 PREPARATION OF PHARMACEUTICALS Fischer Esterification Reactions Almost 2500 years ago, physicians such as Hippocrates recommended that patients chew on the bark of the willow to alleviate pain. The active ingredient in willow bark was found to be salicin, a compound made of a molecule of salicyl alcohol bonded to a p-D-glucose molecule. In the stomach, the bond between...
For the preparation and standardization of NaOH with KHP im supposed to boil water for 1hr and 30 min to remove CO2....the problem is that if I don't boil it for that long and (30 min) b/c of not enough time but I put the water I boiled for 1/2 hr aproximately into a NaOH bottle with a CO2 absorber and stored it there for a few days. I would assume that I would have to boil the water again...but...
