Answer #1

Radiation dose equivalent = absorbed dose * RBE factor

absorbed dose = 12 rads

a), b) x rays and gama rays RBE factor =1

dose equivalent = 12 *1 = 12 Rem

c) slow neutrons (< 1Mev) RBE = 2.5+ 18.2exp(-[lnE]2 /6)

= 2.5 + 18.2 exp( -ln12/6) = 20.7

dose equivalent = 12*20.7 = 248.4 Rem

d) fast neutrons whole body , assume E = 10 Mev

RBE = 5.0 + 17.0 exp (-ln20)2/6 ) = 8.81

dose equivalent H = 12*8.81 = 105.72 Rem

e) fast neutrons to the eyes

Tissue weight factor for eyes = 0.12

Dose equivalent = 105.71 *0.12 = 12.69 Rem

    IONISING RADIATION QUESTION 2 The risk for stochastic effects when a person receives a non-whole body dose can be described by: Select one: a. The activity. b. The absorbed dose. c. The effective dose. d. The equivalent dose. The effective dose from an x-ray point source is measured to be D mSv. If the distance to the source is doubled and the exposure time is halved, what is the new effective dose? Select one: a. D mSv b. D/2 mSv...

    Technetium Dosage. Radioactive isotopes are often used for medical imaging. Technetium-99m (Tc-99m) is a particularly popular isotope since it has a short half-life and is easy to make. Also, Tc-99m can be chemically bonded to a number of different compounds and cell types for imaging different parts of the body. Tc-99m has a half-life of 6.02 hours. It decays into Tc-99 by emitting a gamma ray of energy 140 keV. For this problem, assume that Tc-99m is present in the...
