A confined aquifer is 3 m thick. The potentiometric surface drops 17 cm between two wells that are 240 m apart. If the hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer is 6.4 m/day and the effective porosity is 0.17, (a) determine the volume of water flowing per day through a strip of the aquifer that is 3 m wide; (b) determine the groundwater flow velocity; (c) calculate the velocity of a contaminant in this aquifer if dry bulk density of aquifer material = 1.8 g/cm3 , organic carbon content of aquifer material = 0.015, organic carbon partition coefficient of contaminant=22 cm3 /g; (d) if the contaminant is injected in the upstream well, calculate the time required to arrive at the downstream well (assume advective transport of contaminant only).
