  • Ca++ channels in the axon terminal open


- After sarcolemma depolarizes due to influx of sodium ion, action potential is carried down by the T tubules.
- Depolarization of T-tubules causes opening of Ca2+ channels in the sarcoplasmic reticulum.
- Calcium ions are released from sarcoplasmic reticulum into the sarcoplasm.
- Calcium binds to the troponin and changes its shape, moving tropomyosin off of actin's myosin binding sites.


- Calcium channels in axon terminal open when nerve impulse reaches axon terminal or pre-synaptic neuron. This event is not included in depolarization phase of skeletal muscle.
