Answer #1

Energy, E = 0.5 kA^2 = mg (H + A)

Spring constant, k = (1000 x (1.7 + 0.58) x 9.8)/(0.5 x 0.58^2)

k = 1.3 x 10^5 N/m

    A heavy-duty stapling gun uses a 0.153-kg metal rod that rams against the staple to eject it. The rod is pushed by a stiff spring called a "ram spring" (k = 39700 N/m). The mass of this spring may be ignored. Squeezing the handle of the gun first compresses the ram spring by 4.27 cm from its unstrained length and then releases it. Assuming that the ram spring is oriented vertically and is still compressed by 1.61 cm when the...

    You are in an temporary elevator when the rope holding it breaks. Fortunately, there is a large bumper, essentially a spring, at the bottom of the elevator shaft in case of just such a catastrophe. Your initial height above the top of the (uncompressed) spring is 1.07 m. The mass of the elevator (plus you) is 892 kg. The spring constant of the spring is 3.47 x 10 N/m. How far below the position of the top of the uncompressed...
