A study was done on the propagation of an ultrasonic stress wave through a substance. In particular, attenuation (the decrease in amplitude of the stress wave measured in neper/cm) in fiber-glass reinforced polyester composites was measured and given by 2.6, 2.5, 2.2, 2.0, 2.0, 2.1, 2.3, 2.6. For your convenience, for this data set, we have xbar and sbar 2.288 and 0.253.

(a) Construct a 95% confidence interval for the true mean attenuation values.

(b) Find the sample size needed to estimate the true mean attenuation values to within 0.2 using a 95% confidence interval. (Hint: Use the sample standard deviation to replace the population standard deviation σ in the formula).

Female undergraduates in randomized groups of 22 took part in a self-esteem study. The study measured an index of self-esteem from the point of view of competence, social acceptance, and physical attractiveness. Let x1, x2, and x3 be random variables representing the measure of self-esteem through x1 (competence), x2 (social acceptance), and x3 (attractiveness). Higher index values mean a more positive influence on self-esteem. Variable Sample Size Mean x Standard Deviation s Population Mean x1 22 20.11 2.99 μ1 x2...

The negative effects of ambient air pollution on children's lung function has been well established, but less research is available about the impact of indoor air pollution. The authors of an article investigated the relationship between indoor air-pollution metrics and lung function growth among children ages 6-13 years living in four Chinese cities. For each subject in the study, the authors measured an important lung-capacity index known as FEV1, the forced volume (in ml) of air that is exhaled in...

In the production of a particular resin, quality control is tested by measuring the viscosity (in units of centi-poise) of the pre-cursor liquid (which is a strong function of the pre-cursor liquid composition).
