Antigone

1. The central conflict in Antigone is between civic and religious duty.

The conflict is between Antigone and Creon. Antigone argues that the law of God is important, while Creon argues that laws of man are above all. Haemon is the son of Creon and Tiresias is the blind prophet. The central conflict in the story does not revolve around them.

2. After initially rejecting Antigone’s request for help, Ismene tries to share Antigone's guilt and punishment.

After rejecting Antigone's request, Creon accuses Ismene of lurking like a snake and helping in the burial. Ismene chooses not to deny the charges and says to Antigone, that she is not ashamed to join her suffering, as a fellow voyager.

3. None of the above.

Creon changes his mind, when the Prophet Tiresias foresees and warns him about a disaster, if he doesn't change his mind towards Antigone. It's too late and his son and wife commit suicide.

4.At the end of the play, Antigone and Haemon kills themselves, after failing to convince and kill his father Creon, the King. Seeing this, his mother commits suicide. Creon is left to rule alone in despair.

5. One theme of this play is religious duty supersedes civilian authority.

Creon is firm in his argument that civilian duty is important and above all. Until, he mets with a disaster and his wife, son and Antigone kill themselves in the process. Religious duty (fate) supersedes civilian authority.
