Provide a reaction description of NH3.

You must include the following: a. Type of reaction—Describe the general class of reaction (combustion, acid/base, redox, etc.). b. Heat of reaction—Provide the amount of heat that must be added or removed from this reaction at the relevant temperature and whether this reaction is exothermic or endothermic. c. All products, reactants, and catalysts—Include a balanced equation with all states of participants. d. Special considerations—Document the safe operating range of this reaction, safety considerations, and side reactions that may produce unwanted products. e. Summary of other possible reactions—Provide either another reaction to produce the compound or an alternate use and its reaction.

Answer #1

One of the important application of Ammonia in industry is the production of Hydrogen Cyanide known as "Andrussow Oxidation" process. The reaction is given by-

a. The reaction,as obvious from the name is an Oxidation reaction

b. the reaction is carried out at around 1000 degree Celsius is Highly Exothermic and approx 115 kCal of heat is produced by the reaction which makes it a self-sustaining reaction.

c. the reaction is carried out under catalyst support and Platinum gauze catalyst are used for this oxidation.

hydrocarbon other than Methane can also be considered for this reaction.

d. For Optimum yield,a small amount of contact time in the order of 0.003s is necessary and maintaining the temperature to 1000 degrees is a must to attain the equilibrium.

Some carbon monoxide and nitrogen are formed due to direct combustion reaction. Also there is a chance of decomposition of Ammonia in such a high temperature.the product gas that is obtained at equilibrium and some unreacted ammonia. Thus contain a mixture of HCN,NH3, water vapor,Hydrogen,Nitrogen,CO. The desired product HCN is recoverd thereafter.

  • Another method to produce HCN is the method where only Methane and ammonia are combined at approx 1400 degree celsius
