My question is in two parts as I'm having a hard time understanding the material it's asking.

What are the four components of an information system? What are the five functions that these components provide?

The Four components of an information system and its functions are -

1. Technology :

  • Technology or Information Technology includes software, hardware and telecommunications.
  • The Software is divided into System software i.e Operating system like Windows, Linux, MAC etc and Application software such as Microsoft Office, Games etc.
  • The Hardware involves peripheral devices such as keyboard, mouse, monitor, routers, hard disks etc.
  • The Telecommunications include hardware to form network such as fiber optics, WiFi. For communication the network can LAN, WAN or MAN. It also has network of networks i.e the Internet.

2. People :

The launch, design, maintenance and development of any information system involves groups of people or teams. All the people from the help desk workers, to programmers, to system analyst, and to the CIO i.r Chief Information Officer are essential and should not be overlooked.

3. Data :

It is collection of facts.The gist of every information system is Data. These raw facts can be presented in variety of forms and shapes. If the data is properly organized then decision making is very easy.The data is stored in database or data warehouse where it safe.

4. Processes :

The set of activities designed to achieve a task is called as Business process. The integration of processes with Information systems lead to more productivity and better control on those processes. The ultimate goal is using technology to improve and manage processes within company and externally with customers and suppliers.
