A large truck is carrying a heavy load. A significant hazard for the driver is that the load may slide forward, crushing the cab, if the truck stops suddenly in an accident or even in braking. Assume a 10,000 kg load sits on the flatbed of a 20,000 kg truck moving at 12 m/s. Assume the load is not tied down to the truck but has a coefficient of friction 0.5 with the flatbed of the truck. Calculate the minimum stopping distance for which the load will not slide forward relative to the truck.

Answer #1

Solution)

Here, Force exerted by the truck= Frictional force

So, ma= uFn= umg

Hence, a= ug=0.5*9.8= 4.9 m/s^2

Now, we know

V^2=u^2+ 2as

0=12^2+2(-4.9)*s

Hence, distance s= 14.69 m

    2. (25 points) One hauling truck is traveling on a level road. The driver suddenly applies the brakes, causing the truck to decelerate by an amount 9/3. This causes a box in the rear of the truck to slide forward. If the coefficient of sliding friction between the box and the trucked is 1/4, find the acceleration of the box relative to the truck.

The coefficient of static friction between the package and the truck's flatbed is 0.310, and the coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.240. (a) The truck accelerates forward on level ground. A crate is loaded onto a flatbed truck and the coefficient of static friction between the crate and the truck is 0.45. If the driver of the truck is moving at 25 m/s and sees the car ahead of him stop, 147 m away, will the crate slide relative to the truck as the driver avoids a collision? If so, what is the acceleration (magnitude and direction) of the crate?

    A truck with failed brakes is moving downgrade at 120 km/hr just before the driver steers the truck up an emergency escape ramp with an inclination of theta= 15 degrees. The trucks mass is 1.4x10^4 kg. Assume that the rolling friction behaves like kinetic friction, and the coefficient of rolling friction between the tires and ramp is 0.10. What minimum length L must the ramp have if the truck is to stop (momentarily) along it?
