It is possible that tagging genes can alter their function. If the gene is essential for are essential for correct meiosis, the tagged gene (with altered function) will be homozygous lethal. Since it is homozygous lethal, we will have to maintain it as a heterozygote. Assuming we start with a plate that is 100% heterozygous, what proportion of the worms would have the tagged genes after one generation? After two generations? After 3 generations? (Assume generations are synchronous and do not overlap) Show your work.

In gerbils there is a recessive mutant gene that causes a lethal condition. For the purpose of this problem let the symbol A denote the normal allele and a the mutant. In heterozygote individuals who carry both versions of the allele (Aa), this causes a white spotting color pattern. Homozygotes for the mutant (aa) die as embryos and are never seen in live gerbils. Since the mutant allele is lethal in the homozygous form, natural selection will occur against the...

In Drosophila (fruit flies) the genes how, dumpy and ebony are located on chromosome 3. LOF = loss of function. Flies homozygous for a LOF mutation (no gene product made) in ebony have dark black bodies. Flies homozygous for a LOF mutation (no gene product made) in dumpy have truncated (short) wings. Flies homozygous for a partial LOF mutation (some gene product made but significantly less than normal) in how have wings that will not fold down (held out wings;...

Which of the following is not one of the ways that meiosis can introduce variability into a population via sexual reproduction? meiosis never introduces genetic variation production of diploid gametes independent assortment along the metaphase plate crossing over random fertilization The role of meiosis in Mendel's law of segregation is that it allows crossing over to occur. it allows genes to be duplicated. it separates sister chromatids and exact copies of genes it separates homologous chromosomes and therefore gene alleles...

On the island of Notion, in the Factotum Archipelago, there lives a population of pencil bears. A portion of these bears have silky fur, and as a result, are much better surfers. The texture of the fur is determined by a single autosomal locus with two alleles: S (trait allele) and s (wild type allele). In a recent study, researched collected the values in the following table: Table 1. Counts of Pencil Bear fur style by genotype Phenotype Genotype Silky...
