Bile juice, bile acids and bile salts are produced by liver and stored in the gall bladder. The contraction of gall bladder pushes bile through bile duct into duodenum.

Since George’s bile duct is blocked and little bile can reach the duodenum, following actions would be hampered and would have problems:

  • Emulsifying lipids: By emulsification large lipid molecules are broken down into smaller lipid globules. Bile helps in emulsification of lipids.
  • Absorbing lipids: Bile acids help in solubilization of lipids. When combined with pancreatic lipase, lipids are absorbed by small intestine.
  • Forming micelles: Bile salts help in formation of micelles of fatty acids.
